NFL Game Preview and Odds:
Free Picks and Predictions on this game between the Carolina Panthers vs Indianapolis Colts kicking off this Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 1pm et at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The current DraftKings NFL odds have the Colts as a -3 point favorite against the spread and the over/under at 34 total points. The betting public currently has 66% of their money behind the Colts as the home favorite.
Carolina Panthers:
Carolina Panthers now enter in the Sam Darnold era. Unfortunately, you won’t see him in this matchup because the Panthers head coach Matt Rhule is planning to rest his starters. Sam Darnold is 13-25 overall in his career as a starter, so don’t expect too much out of him this season. I will admit that at times he does look like a great quarterback, but Darnold lost me way too much money in key moments when playing for USC, so I still hold a grudge against him. I just can’t see him having a career reboot where all of a sudden he wins 11 games and brings the Panthers to the playoffs this season.
You will get to see PJ Walker and Will Grier battle it out this game for the backup quarterback position and who knows maybe one of them could be potentially replacing him mid season if Darnold struggles. Regarding the backfield, Christian McCaffrey will be the #1 guy, but they did draft Chuba Hubbard, who I’m a big fan of and excited to see him ball tonight. Chubba will share the backfield with Reggie Bonnafon, but they’ll have to go up against this Indianapolis defense who was one of the top teams in the league when it came to stopping the run last season.
Carolina scored an average of 22 points per game last season and we’re in the middle of the pack on defense, giving up an average of 25 points per game, They’ll need to improve drastically in both those areas after coming off a 2020 season where they won just 5 games.
Indianapolis Colts:
On the other side of the field, the Indianapolis Colts now enter into the Carson Wentz era. Ya, I know it doesn’t sound too exciting, but I think I’d rather have him at the helm than Sam Darnold. You won’t see Wentz get snaps for this game since he underwent surgery just a few weeks ago, but you will see Jacob Eason get the start with Sam Ehlinger most likely starting the next game against the Vikings. Ehlinger lacks some of Eason’s arm talent, but he may ultimately be a better replacement until Carson Wentz is ready to return to action. Indianapolis last season had one of the best pass protection in the NFL and hope to get starting guard Quenton Nelson back from injury and available for week 1 so they can keep up that performance.
