The Yankees return to the Bronx after a road trip filled with ups and downs, while the Giants come in riding one of their strongest early-season stretches in two decades.
New York opened the year hot at home, going 4-2 while smashing 22 homers and putting up 53 runs in just six games. But that power didn’t fully carry over on the road — they went 3-3, hit just four home runs, and batted .251 during stops in Pittsburgh and Detroit. Still, they ended strong with a 4-3 win over the Tigers, thanks to Ben Rice’s clutch two run homer and Max Fried’s dominant seven inning, 11 strikeout performance. Rice is swinging it well, hitting .306 early on.
Aaron Judge also looks dialed in, batting .354 after a quiet start. His two run single in the ninth sealed Wednesday’s win — a key moment after Devin Williams gave up three runs in the bottom half.
As for the Giants, they’re off to a 9-3 start — their best since 2003. They’ve already walked it off three times this season and just capped their latest homestand with a wild 8-6 win over the Reds. Mike Yastrzemski ended it with a two run shot in extras, and he’s batting .344 so far. Rookie Jung Hoo Lee is flashing early promise, hitting .333 with three hits in that finale, while Wilmer Flores tied it late with a bomb of his own.
They’ll hand the ball to Robbie Ray (2-0, 3.18 ERA), who’s coming off back-to-back solid outings. He gave up just one run in six innings his last time out and has looked sharp, though his career numbers vs. the Yankees (1-3, 4.18 ERA) are worth noting.
Marcus Stroman (0-0, 7.27 ERA) gets the call for New York. While his ERA is inflated, his offense gave him a big cushion in both of his starts (22 runs of support). Stroman’s history vs. San Francisco is solid, a 3-2 record with a 2.92 ERA in six starts, so he’ll be looking to bounce back at home.
