NFL Game Preview and Odds:
This NFL Preseason Week 1 Steelers vs Eagles game is set to kickoff at 7:30pm et at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.
The DraftKings NFL odds have the Eagles list as -1 point favorites against the spread and the over/under at 35 total points.
The NFL betting public has 56% of their money behind the Steelers as the road underdog.
Pittsburgh Steelers:
When it comes to these NFL Preseason games, the first thing you want to look at is the depth chart of both teams defenses. We knew last week the pressure that the Steelers will bring to the Cowboys quarterbacks would be way too much for them to handle and that’s exactly how it played out.
Last season Pittsburgh had a top five defense that only gave up an average of 21 points per game and this 2021 season their defense should be just as good.
For this matchup, Big Ben Roethlisberger will still be out and Mason Rudolph will start again at quarterback. Rudolph should play around three drives and then Dwayne Haskins will come in for multiple drives. Fourth stringer, Josh Dobbs will finish out the game. From a fans stand point, all eyes will be on their rookie running back Najee Harris. In his debut, he put up 22 rushing yards on 7 carries. He’s got that Alabama Crimson Tide work ethic and Mike Tomlin loves it.
Philadelphia Eagles:
Speaking of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Philadelphia Eagles now come into the Jalen Hurts era. With Carson Wentz shipped away to the Indianapolis Colts, the Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen has built this new dual threat offense to match Jalen Hurts’ strengths. The coach hasn’t made it clear how much you’ll see of Hurts for this game, but my guess would be at most just a few drives since he’s had a rocky training camp.
Former 49er Quarterback Nick Mullens will see a lot of snaps for this matchup. In Mullens 16 NFL starts, he’s thrown 25 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. The 36-year old veteran quarterback Joe Flacco was also added in the offseason to this roster, but is unknown if he’ll get any snaps for this one.
For Philadelphia’s coaches a lot of the focus for this game will be on the running back position to determine who’s going to be backing up Miles Sanders. You have Boston Scott, Kenneth Gainwell, Jordan Howard, Kerryon Johnson, and Jason Huntley all trying to make their cases for roster spots.
The Eagles were near the bottom of the NFL last season on offense, only scoring an average of 20.9 points per game while giving up an average of 26 points per game of defense, so it’ll be exciting to watch this Eagles team hopefully improve both of those numbers this 2021 season.
