Pope Francis says Jesus is Something more than the World Cup

World Cup. Speaking the language of Brazil's soccer-mad youth, Pope told them that being a good Catholic is much like training to be a soccer player.

However, he did not want to forget to bring in Jesus in his speech. Francis just added a bit of a seemingly blasphemous twist, as he told them that Jesus offers them ''something more than the World Cup.''

Pope was in the land of Pele. The joke might have gone over poorly as it was made by the pope who is from Argentina, Brazil's nemesis on the pitch. But the crowd cheered it loudly on Copacabana beach on Saturday where they had gathered for World Youth Day.

Francis is a big and regular fan of the Buenos Aires club San Lorenzo. He is a lifelong member (ID No. 88235) since 2008.

On the trip he has added a sizeable collection of soccer jerseys which he has a nice collection of. These jerseys have been given to him by the faithful soccer players and fans.

He expressed his desire for peace on Twitter:

“May sports always be a means of exchange and growth, never of violence and hate.” #Rio2013 #JMJ
